Intermodal Network Update for Friday, July 18, 2025
OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE
This week, BNSF addressed multiple service challenges affecting normal train operations on our busy Southern Transcon route, which runs between Southern California and the Midwest, due to widespread severe thunderstorms. On Wednesday night, trains experienced delays due to flash flood warnings for over 250 miles of the Transcon as storms moved through the region, from the Southwest across the Plains to the Upper Midwest. Eastern Kansas, particularly the Kansas City area, experienced the most severe impacts of the storm. The flood warnings expired yesterday, and the water has now receded. BNSF's operating teams are focused on restoring service and fluidity on the Transcon, deploying additional locomotives and resources to affected locations. As a result, we anticipate improvements in train velocity in the region throughout the weekend.
Despite facing weather challenges, we have seen slight improvements in our overall service performance metrics. Average car velocity has increased compared to last week, although it remains slightly lower than the average from the previous month. Terminal dwell times have also improved by nearly two percent compared to last week, and the average is also lower than it was in June. However, our local service compliance measure has declined compared to both the previous week and the previous month.
SERVICE EXPECTATIONS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD
Additional thunderstorms are forecasted throughout the weekend in the Midwest. Some of these storms could be strong, bringing heavy rain and localized flooding. Triple-digit highs are expected across the Southern Plains, with heat indexes exceeding 110 degrees in some areas. BNSF teams are monitoring these situations for potential service impacts.
The rest of the network is expected to experience favorable operating conditions over the weekend and into next week.
