Mechanical

The Mechanical department is responsible for directly supervising shop craft employees to safely and efficiently accomplish work assignments and goals for the following groups:

  • Locomotive – mechanical functions pertaining to train power
  • Railcar – mechanical functions pertaining to equipment used to haul freight (such as boxcars, flatcars, and tank cars)

Part of these responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring proper materials and tools are used, and report on mechanical aspects of failures and other emergency conditions related to locomotives and railcars.
  • Overseeing locomotive and railcar maintenance, repair and servicing operations.
  • Conducting safety meetings, audits and briefings pertaining to the shop and employees.

Work in the Mechanical Department is a 24 by 7 environment including nights, weekends, evenings and holidays, on call or available for emergency situations. Employees work mostly indoors in a shop environment.

The Mechanical Department is approximately 6,000 employees strong.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous leadership experience in an operations, mechanical, engineering, or industrial environment
  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Operations, Logistics, Business Administration or Management
  • Previous railroad, heavy equipment or facility maintenance experience
